One possibility of occupying my kitchen table inspired by six possibilities of occupying a given space by à ngels ribé, 1973
My hands are dry. I've been getting a manicure every two-three weeks for the last four years, before that I did my nails once a week since I could remember learning to paint them. This is the most tired, cracked and nail polish-less they've ever been. I'm ok with that. I thought not being able to get a manicure would send me into a similar vain anxiety freak out that having a bad reaction to getting my wisdom teeth had (my friend told me I looked like post mortem John Belushi, I laughed so hard I spit out my JR 5.5). But it turns out a mix of a pandemic and not being 16 helps you feel I am ok with having tired looking handsÂ
My Grandma was very critical of my nail polish choices and she thought if was important for all humans to have well manicured hands. While at the same time using her hands to craft, create and mold. We was an incredible gardener, knitter, drummer, she took up Chinese brush painting in her 50's and baked all the cakes for all celebrations. Form + Function.Â
We've been called to use our hands, to take care of them in different maybe not so manicured ways. This ritual of scrubbing and singing long enough to make it count. In our collective boredom our hands have found new hobbies. Shaping loafs, fitting puzzle pieces, knitting, striking keys, crafting, creating, twiddling, idling. Form + Function.
My hands have been doing a lot of scrolling, pinning and I pinched my fingers in a crappy old pair of tongs trying to flip tofu in a pan last week.Â
I hope you are doing well, in whatever way well means to you.Â
ALSO I love sharing the little pieces of art and community that have molded together in this mess. My pal Jasmine has launched a new project called "With My Hands" I highly suggest you read about her nothingness. Are you making art with your hands? About your hands? Are you making absolutely nothing? I wanna hear about it!Â
I love you,
phoebe
