Hello Sweet Friends!!Â
My pattern of writing to you has unraveled the last few weeks, every week I have sat down to write some sort of email to you all, in some sort of frazzled half baked fashion. I have a half basked email on the note app on my phone, one scribbled on my note pad and one draft email set up. The combination of end of summer + pandemic has frayed my already sporadic person schedule. This isn't some kind of excuse (and also this is the cool thing about the friendship newsletter is that there are NO RULES!) but just a very transparent peek at how the heck I am doing, and maybe how you are doing too.
I am working on creating a better schedule for myself so I can be accountable for the things I want to be doing, instead of scrolling through Instagram while writing an email or buying fabric online while I also update my website. Completing one task and staying focused is something I have always struggled with, so like getting to be my own boss doesn't help (While writing this email I googled how much heat lamps cost and contemplated the fire hazard of having one on my balcony). A way of staying accountable to myself is being accountable to others. Gentle peer pressure and the promise of another human being is what powers me out of bed most days. Gentle peer pressure was a huge push to create the Okay Shoe Portal and has been the theme of the last few Okay Hangs. We show up, no expectations for finished art, and see what happens. But we showed up. The hard part of doing anything is showing up, leaving the house, getting off the couch. But what we're confronted with right now is an obligation, only in the other room. The opportunity to only tune in as much as we want, sign up for a zoom conference and cook dinner at the same time. Routine and habits for leaving the house have melted away. Maybe this is a great thing for you, maybe it isn't, maybe it's in the murky grey area between the two.Â
If you're interested in gently shaping your habits with me I am doing Dr Emily Bennets Habits are Magic challenge right now. Emily's approach to shifting your operating systems is wildly compassionate, and I feel showed up RIGHT on time. I am working on creating a routine for myself that allows me to create when I want, and to hold myself accountable for the work I want to be doing. The Okay Shoe Portal has been all about creative accountability and maybe a new habit of yours is showing up to Okay Hang Saturday mornings! I don't have all the answers as to how we show up, but I think we will find them if we look together. Hey, maybe this will result in a more consistent scheduled email from me, maybe it won't. Â
I love you all
xx
