tending to our creative selves ✨💖
Hi Friends! How are you feeling? I am missing museums and art galleries. I would walk around the AGO on the coldest day in February even if they told me I had to leave my coat on the whole time and walk all bundled up through the spiral staircase facing out onto Grange park with the sun shining in and be all hot and sweaty the whole time just to see some flippin art. I am truly missing feeling inspired and moved by others expression.
Andy J. Pizza from the Creative Pep Talk Podcast (my fav podcast that I think I have mentioned exactly 934820 times in this newsletter) was talking about Creative Love languages in a recent episode, in that our creativity is a language we speak with. IE “Acts of service” would be food, music, acting. The vehicle you use to deliver your creative message. Being in service to your medium.
It made me think, if creativity is a language we speak, then how do we show our creativity love? If creativity is this sweet thing we have inside of us (and we ALL HAVE CREATIVITY INSIDE OF US, like everyone on planet earth does). This sweet ball of fire that makes us doodle, or think critically, or hum a song, how do we show creativity we love it, and take care of it?
I miss art galleries so badly. My creativity, the little ball of stuff inside me that LIGHTS ME UP, hasn’t been fed the stuff (art galleries) it needs. I think so many of us have a hungry little ball of creativity inside us always, but especially now. We don't necessarily have the things we need, or vehicles to be inspired by or with. What other things can we do to light up and nourish that thing inside of us, the stuff that moves us? How do we tend and keep the things that help us express and feel and make and create? Even when they might not be available to us. So, for your consideration.
THE CREATIVE LOVE LANGUAGES
Quality time with our creativity // Inspiration dates, time in a museum, sitting listening to a song, time that juices your creativity UP
Touch// Grounded creative moments with physical stuff. Fingers on a typewriter or knobs of a mixer, hands in paint, pens on paper and ink in nails.
Gifts// Gifting your creativity a pen you love, or a new tool, a thing!
Acts of service // Getting your workspace tidy, organizing file names, lighting a candle, creative housekeeping, and fostering your creative environment.
Words of affirmation // Check is with your creative self-talk. Is it kind? Is it “I’m bad at this”, “I’m not an artist” “I didn’t x so I can’t y”? What mantra’s, self-talk or dialogue can you infuse into your life to tel your creativity "I love you".
So, I can't go to an art gallery, but I did “go” to &Arts creative hour and spent some time with other people and their art, and that FULLY ticked the box on feeling inspired, so much so that I had time-space a capacity to write to you. Ouph! Tend to your creativity, because we need it. We need you to feel, express, make, do the thing. Even when you, and systems of oppression, tell it not to.
Places to take your creativity on a date, nourish it, tend to it.
What is your creative love language? How do you marinate in creativity? I'd love to hear from you.
I love you all,
xx
