creative fish
Precious precious friends! Hello! Something I have been truly enjoying lately is bad art. Doodling, journaling, cheesy ideas, just making stuff for the sake of sitting down and making my brain thinking about something other than the deep-dark-pain-of-being-alive-in-the-world, ya know? Yesterday I had the joy of chatting with my sweet friend Jacqueline from &Arts. We talked about all things creativity, and art, and feelings, and being good humans, and writing your recipes to sit down and get to work on art and justice for the world!
Jaqueline talks very smartly about the difference between creative work (the journal, the sketch, the workshop, the notes app description of the thing) and precious work, the things we spend years, our whole lives, lots of time! Obsessing and noodling and being really particular about. David Lynch calls ideas fish, that we have to sit quietly and toss our lure into the pond and wait for an idea to come along, or sometimes they grab the bait really quickly. But they're just that, ideas (or fish)! The work is taking that idea (or fish) and gutting it and translating it into the podcast, the movie, the painting, the workshop, the thing.
And I think that is an important distinction to make for all things, what's really precious and interesting, and what is inconsequential, what is an experiment? And maybe there is room for this thing, idea, notes app memo, to be BOTH!? Maybe our fish (ideas) are left to swim freely, maybe not every catch is THE ONE, or maybe it is, but we have to find the time to sit patiently at the shore of our mind's eye, toss our lure in, and see what we find, before we start translating, making, creating.
Some things Jacqueline and I discovered together while fishing (chatting) 🎣
Questions to ask before translating your ideas into things
How does this feel?
Am I okay?
Whats the point?
Why am I doing this? What is my mission and is this propelling my mission forward?
Jaqueline ALSO just so CONVENIENTLY happens to be this months Digital Artist in Residence in the Okay Shoe Portal (our patreon). She is joining us on the 27th to take over an Okay hang and BOY OH BOY AM I JAZZEDDDDD. Dive in to join us!
Go make some bad art! Set and fish and mine for ideas!
I love you all,
xx
