If you’re ingesting these words over your cup of coffee, in the park or on the way home, there is a seed inside you that feels creativity is important. In my couple of years living online I have found that the idea – Creativity is vital to our collective wellbeing– is a hard sell. Its not easy, clickable or viral, and comes with a lot of “yahh BUT…”s.
People want the other end of the line, live creatively, but feel scared to actually commit that truth inside them. And I don’t blame anyone for this. I maybe write these words every week here – Creativity Is Antithetical to the world we live in. And here is some research that gives my hypothesis a bit of weight, we become less creative over time, and it is impacting our ability to solve these big challenges we face. 98% of 5-year-olds scored at a level of “creative genius” when tested for innovative and imaginative ideas and creative thinking.
And although the numbers say only 2% of adults make it into the world with that Creative Genuis thinking in tact – that number isn’t fixed.
I don’t blame anyone for proclaiming “I am not an artist” when we’re being flooded with the worst news you’ve ever heard repeatedly spaced between white women sitting in fields of palm fronds telling us its our “vibration” that is the issue.
Of course you don’t feel like a fucking creative genius.
But. We’re not stuck with feeling like our inherent god-given gifts have been ripped from us. Our practise is practice. It is not these big sweeping gestures of LOOK WHAT I MADE. LOOK AT THE ANSWER I HAVE UNCOVERED what totals up a creative life. It isn’t the number of perfect paintings you make, pots you build, songs you write, courses oyu launch, books you think of. It is the slow, constant commitment to that path.
To walk along the street and imagine the worlds that live within each tree stump. To invent a new dance move in your kitchen you preformace one time and one time only. To sing just a little bit louder in the park. To hold up a fork and think of 20 new songs you could write with this fork and this fork alone.
We are already Creative Geniuses. That 5 year old never goes away. It peaks it head out in these small moments. It just a question of, when that 5 year old shows up, will you answer the call?
Answering that call is how we will heal and solve the issues and systemic oppression that UNDOES ALL THAT INHERENT CREATIVE THINKING IN THE FIRST PLACE. The most honest, loving, kind, regenerative, radical act you could ever do is use that Big Beautiful Brain and dream.
This Week on the Creators Dispatch, betting on yourself and asking “What is working?”
